Wow, this DVD is incredible and a gift from the Heavens. How can anyone complain about this. People like Perbes from Spain and Kevin from Missouri need to shut their mouth about audio quality this, video quality that. Listen, if you are sitting on anything better we can watch of the original Skynyrd, then by all means start whining. But last time I checked, this release contains probably the best video and audio of the Ronnie fronted band around. So that makes me happy to see. Lastly, the video is from 1976, 28 years ago. If you’re a true fan, you take what you can get, and leave the bitching to the losers with the $10,000 TV’s and Audio systems who can’t get this in 16:9 picture ratio and 5.1 dolby surround sound! Long Live Skynyrd.
I bought this VHS tape expecting a movie about the band, that is not what Freebird The Movie is. What you get is some incredible video tape of the band in various concerts from dates in 1976 to 1977. Most of the tape is from an Open Air Rock show that Skynyrd played in England. While most of the tape is in color, there are some parts that are in black and white, believe it or not that does not really detract from this film. The band plays 15 songs on this tape, they are as follows: Workin For MCA, I Ain’t The One, Saturday Night Special, Searching, What’s Your Name, Whiskey Rock-A-Roler, Travelin Man, Gimmie Three Steps, That Smell, Gimmie Back My Bullets, Cry For The Bad Man, Call Me The Breeze, T For Texas, Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird of course. The song Simple Man plays as the credits roll. There are interviews with band members (live and dead) family and frynds between most of the songs. While this tape does not tell the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd the band (for that look for the VH1 Behind The Music episode) or the terrible accident that happened to them on that October day 1977 it does catch them in all their splendor, both tragic and glorious all at once. There is indoor BW footage taken from New Jersey and from San Francisco, CA. The outdoor open air footage from England and from A Day On The Green in Oakland, CA is wonderful, flawless footage with spectacular sound. The segment from Oakland was filmed only 2 months before the crash, it will make you cry…be warned. From comparing the England footage against that of Oakland it is clear America has better looking girls (even in 70’s duds) and better dentists. Two of the three surviving members have reformed the band and added Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlock of Blackfoot fame and one of the founders of the band The Outlaws…the Three Guitar Attack Lives! Let hope that the future for Lynyrd Skynyrd is filled with as much good fortune as the past was filled with bad fortune. Good film a steal at this price.

In olden days, as Cole Porter famously observed, a mere glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. So it’s heartening to report that this 1965 black comedy still delivers on its billing as “the motion picture with something to offend everyone.” Tony Richardson, fresh off the liberating Tom Jones, brings Evelyn Waugh’s self-described “little nightmare” to the screen with all its sacrilegious shocks (and then some!) intact, courtesy of screenwriters Terry Southern (Dr. Strangelove) and Christopher Isherwood. Robert Morse stars as Dennis Barlow, an Englishman abroad and a fish out of water in Southern California. Stumbling across the Hollywood landscape like a cross between Candide and Jerry Lewis. Barlow gets a uniqu perspective of the American experience when he finds employment at the Happier Hunting Ground, a ramshackle pet cemetery, and the flipside of the fabulously vulgar Whispering Glades. In a virtuoso dual role, Jonathan Winters costars as glad-handing Happier Hunting Grounds proprietor Harry, whose brother, Whispering Glades’ Blessed Reverend, has some out-of-this-world plans for the “Loved Ones.” The mad, mad, mad mad cast also includes John Gielgud as Dennis’s ill-fated expatriate uncle, an artist unceremoniously booted from the movie studio where he has worked for 31 years; Anjanette Comer as Aimee, a Whispering Glades cosmetician torn between Dennis and embalmer Mr. Joyboy (an unforgettable Rod Steiger), who registers his broken heart on the faces of his corpses; a teenage Paul Williams as a science prodigy; Liberace as a funeral salesman peddling eternal flames both “perpetual or standard”; Milton Berle and Margaret Leighton as “a typical well-adjusted American couple” whose deceased dog puts a crimp in their dinner plans; and even Jamie Farr, seen fleetingly as a waiter. Tony Leung Kar-fai tracks his missing expatriate wife (Maggie Cheung) from Hong Kong to New York City, which is depicted simply as an urban sewer in this gratingly arch and pretentious 1990 melodrama, written and directed by the ambitious young director Clara Law (The Reincarnation of Golden Lotus). Every specific detail of the horrors of New York rings luridly false, and Maggie Cheung, who was just about perfect in Ann Hui’s expat heart-tugger Song of the Exile, embarrasses herself. In fairness, no actress on earth could make something convincingly human out of the character she has been asked to play, a victim whose personality has been split down the middle by the pressures of her icky new environment. One half is a demure Chinese village girl, the other a borderline whore, a role she’s forced to assume in order to survive in the Gotham Inferno. As he continus his search, Leung picks up a standard-issu eccentric sidekick, a streetwise, gum-popping Americanized Chinese girl (Hayley Man as a stereotyped punk rocker). The fatal finale (in the shadow of a papier-mache copy of Tiananmen Square’s Goddess of Democracy) is only the most egregious of the movie’s overblown symbolic gestures. –David Chute

Nobody does comic existential angst like Nicolas Cage, who gets a good workout in The Weather Man, an underrated slice of quiet desperation. Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago TV meteorologist who knows only too well the constant uncertainty of predicting the weather. Despite a possible offer from a network morning show, David’s life is a mess: he’s estranged from his kids and irritated wife (Hope Davis), he’s perpetually at odds with his remote father (Michael Caine), and lately people on the street have had the disconcerting habit of throwing food at him. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has perhaps too heavy a touch for this kind of comic melancholy, but screenwriter Steven Conrad has an interesting, almost Mamet-like ear for “written” dialogu–Cage has a few voiceover monologus, including an uproarious sequnce involving tartar sauce and a walk to the store, that are hugely funny. It’s possible that we’ve seen Cage in this kind of character one too many times, but he’s still good at it, and his doleful face and pasted-on smile fit the mood of the picture. Unlike the heroes of most Hollywood movies, David Spritz doesn’t always–or often–do the right thing, but Cage makes you want to see the poor sap make it. –Robert Horton

Julia Ormond faced one of the great challenges of her career when she tried to re-create Audrey Hepburn’s title role in the 1995 remake of 1954’s Sabrina. Happily, Ormond performed admirably, and while she may not have the same gamine charm of Hepburn, she makes the role her own. In fact, her transformation from mousy girl to sophisticated young woman is actually more dramatic in this updated version. The basic plot is the same–chauffeur’s daughter falls in love with the son of the rich household, only to be wooed away by the older brother for business purposes–but it has been entertainingly modernized: The head of the Larrabee household is the strong matriarch (Nancy Marchand); Sabrina goes to Paris to work with a photographer instead of going to cooking school (although that means the wonderful “new egg” scene of the original had to be ditched); David’s (Greg Kinnear) character has been toned down and made more sympathetic; and Humphrey Bogart’s revolutionary plastic has become the flattest TV screen ever made. Lauren Holly does a fine job playing Elizabeth Tyson, David’s fiancee. If you watch this for its own worth–instead of comparing it to the original–this will prove to be a terrific lighthearted romantic comedy. –Jenny Brown
